Around studies

The world as a moving body

The Center for Contemporary Dance at the Cologne University of Music and Dance forms an important hub for dance and dance research within the contemporary dance landscape. The three degree programs BA Dance, MA Dance Education and MA Dance Studies convey practices and perspectives of performative dance art, dance education and dance studies. This constellation, unique in Germany, forms an inspiring, artistic-practical as well as research-oriented study environment, in which interdisciplinary work and experimentation takes place.

Reflecting on practice in a research-based manner

All courses of study prepare students for a professional field in which dance practice, dance mediation and dance studies can no longer be thought of separately. The research conducted by dancers, choreographers, dance mediators and dance scholars in Department 7/ZZT accordingly transcends the format-specific boundaries of training, mediation, research, performance, choreography and academic practice. Students become familiar with the structures and networks of their respective working environments from an international perspective. At the same time, they are accompanied in critically reflecting on their own practices.

In addition to the bachelor's and master's degrees, since 2009 the department has been the only institution in Germany to offer the possibility of a doctorate (Dr. phil.) in dance studies and hosts the Forschungskolleg Tanzwissenschaft, which, in cooperation with the German Dance Archive Cologne, provides an institutional and content-related connection for international researchers*.

A world is not only a structure, a universe, but a collection (...) of bodies that meet, bend, attract and repel each other.
