Mediation in dance and from dance offers diverse professional perspectives, not only in the field of cultural education and mediation work. The field of action "mediation" today forms an exemplary negotiation space for questions relevant to society as a whole. The importance attached to dealing with the bodily dimension of learning, transfer and creative processes has fundamentally changed and strengthened the need for body-sensitive mediation skills in a variety of fields of activity in diverse social fields.

Degree | Master of Arts |

Period of study | 4 Semester |
Course begin | Wintersemester |
ECTS points | 120 Credits |
Students develop and deepen dance-specific competencies in a learning environment that practically and analytically fosters the development of innovative approaches to mediation. This takes place in the examination of singular artistic practices and ways of working, of the conditions of collective (learning) processes, of aspects of bodily reflexivity and embodied learning, as well as through comparative insights into mediation concepts in and from diverse educational contexts. One focus of the curriculum's formats is on the practical as well as theoretical testing and reflection of group-oriented ways of working that promote a conscious approach to diversity, as well as on methods that enable self-organized, self-responsible learning. The sub-areas (including dance-artistic-choreographic approaches, body and training practices, inter- and transdisciplinary approaches to knowledge transfer and educational processes, artistic research methods) are brought together in the students' continuous individual project work. With increasing concretization of their respective specializations and their continuously acquired expertise, they have the opportunity to set their own focal points through elective modules and the support of mentors.
Applications are submitted online via the muvac platform. All information on the procedure can be found on our application page.
In addition to the general requirements for enrollment, the prerequisite for admission to the Master of Arts Dance Education program is the completion of a relevant undergraduate degree in the subjects of dance, dance education, body and movement practice, or an undergraduate degree that allows specialization in dance-performative practice. In justified exceptional cases, admission to the aptitude test may also be granted if the aptitude required for the course of study has been acquired in the profession or in some other way. The decision on this is made by the chairperson of the examination board in consultation with the head of the study program.
Qualifying examination
The aptitude test takes place on invitation and on the basis of the evaluation of the application documents on two consecutive days.
The qualifying examination consists of:
It is essential that the applicant outlines his or her own approach to the means and ways in which mediation takes place. Content can be applied and presented in a variety of ways, e.g. by sharing with a group or by addressing an audience, and should in any case include linguistic-communicative components.
Application Deadline
Application deadline is March 1 of each year for a program start in the winter semester. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Prof. Nina Patricia Hänel.
You can find the course of study and the examination regulations under Documents & Downloads.
The MA Dance Mediation offers an in-depth, research- as well as application-oriented study program. The experience, knowledge and competencies acquired in the master's program enable students to sharpen their dance, artistic-choreographic and/or body-based mediation processes in other fields of work from a politically and socially sensitized practical and theoretical perspective on 'mediation'. The curriculum provides the opportunity to acquire a comprehensive set of tools for the design and analysis of body-based mediation processes in dance.
Graduates have acquired a well-founded, broadly diversified view of and a comprehensive understanding of the diversity and complexity of dance mediation contexts and diverse (educational) contexts within which they can be applied. Depending on the individual focus during the course of study, the degree qualifies students for teaching at art colleges or in the area of pre-vocational training, for projects in formal and non-formal contexts of cultural education, for training activities at municipal and state theaters and on the open market, for mediating-assisting and/or project-accompanying fields of activity in the area of dance-artistic-choreographic project work, as well as for activities in interdisciplinary contexts, in projects at the interface between theory and practice, and in artistic research.
Prospective students have the opportunity to spend a day observing the MA Dance Mediation course.
