The scientific master's program is primarily intended for graduates of artistic-pedagogical programs or of artistic programs, provided that a pedagogical focus has already been set there. Students are given the opportunity to deepen their scientific pedagogical knowledge and further develop their competencies in this area in a two-year master's program. For this purpose, theory and practice of music pedagogy and related disciplines are taught. Since the winter semester 2020/21 it is possible to apply for participation in an elective module on artistic research in the field of music education.
The master's program serves as a further qualification in the field of music education for professional fields such as further education, music mediation, higher education or the management of music institutions and is also designed as preparation for a doctorate. It can be studied part-time while working.
If you have any questions about the program, please contact the relevant contact person(s).

On the Master of Arts in Music Education course, particular emphasis is placed on individual guidance for each student. In this way, students can - if they wish - pursue focused music education interests during their studies, so that the degree course - despite the broad and solid introduction to academic work - is given a personal profile.
Applications are submitted online via the muvac platform. All information on the procedure can be found on our application page.
The program requires one of the following qualifications:
Study of artistic-pedagogical degree programs (e.g. EMP or IP) or
Bachelor of Music (IP profile) or artistic degree courses with a pedagogical profile (i.e. at least 20 CP must have been acquired in general pedagogical / music pedagogical / didactic courses).
Graduates with an artistic degree (Bachelor of Music without a pedagogical profile) can enter the 5th semester of the Bachelor of Music Instrumental Pedagogy or Vocal Pedagogy or Elementary Music Pedagogy after a corresponding aptitude test and thus have the opportunity to acquire a pedagogical profile of at least 20 CP for another two years.
Admission requirements
The following documents must be submitted for admission to the Master of Arts in Music Education course:
An admissions committee appointed by Faculty 5 decides on admission to the course on the basis of these documents. The committee invites applicants to an interview on June 27. The application deadline for the winter semester ends on June 1 of the respective year.
The program offers in-depth study in the subject of music education, especially in the examination of current fundamental issues, the research discipline of music education or music pedagogical artistic research, as well as music education in cultural comparison.
In addition, the expansion of knowledge and skills in educational science as well as music and cultural studies is required. The continuous development of competencies in the area of research methodology and the communication and presentation of knowledge (also with regard to university didactics) accompanies the entire course of study.
The development and deepening of knowledge is systematically linked to music pedagogical practice. For example, a module in all four semesters combines music pedagogical research with the supervision of a practical project or with the elaboration of an artistic development project in the field of music pedagogy. The introduction to the scientific operation of the subject is to be promoted and supported by the recognition of appropriate achievements (conference attendance, participation in methodological workshops, writing of scientific texts, etc.) in the course of study.
