Master of Music -
Modern Piano Music

Creativity grows out of quality.

The Cologne University of Music and Dance offers the master's program in New Piano Music. It is aimed at highly qualified pianists who wish to specialize in the field of 20th and 21st century piano music. Those who have the goal of becoming a member of a new music ensemble will be ideally prepared by this course of study. The master's program includes a wealth of course offerings in the areas of instrumental practice, chamber music/ensemble, and new music theory/composition. Great importance is attached to the development of independent ways of interpretation. In connection with the Institute for New Music, students enjoy a lively and creative environment, shaped by the composers* and the students of the Master's program in Interpretation New Music.

Admission requirement

  • Successful completion of a four-year bachelor's degree or equivalent in one of the possible majors.
  • Students who have not graduated from a German-speaking institution must prove that they have sufficient German language skills (min. level A2 according to the European Framework of Reference).
  • Successfully passed aptitude test

Qualifying examination

The aptitude test consists of an artistic-practical examination in the main subject in which a representative solo program is to be presented. The exam lasts approximately 20 minutes. Detailed information can be found in the aptitude test regulations, especially in the appendix for content requirements and execution of the test.

The study program is divided into four modules, the main subject module, the module "artistic-practical context" and an elective module, in which an individual profile can be achieved via the elective options. The fourth module concludes the program with the completion of the master's examination in the form of a final concert.
