Master of Music -
Song Interpretation for Pianists

Telling what would be impossible to keep silent about.

The master's program is aimed at pianists who have a special interest in the connection between literature and music and who wish to receive special training in chamber music partnership as a duo with singers. The wide-ranging training enables graduates to work professionally in the multifaceted field of vocal music:

  • programming and organization of recitals
  • chamber music concert forms
  • accompaniment in all areas of vocal music
  • accompaniment at auditions and competitions

Special features of the study

The students receive their lessons in the Lied classes of both acting professors of Lied at HfMT Cologne. Close cooperation with the voice professors and lecturers at the Lied Academy of HfMT Cologne ensures an optimal course of study.

Admission requirements

  • The prerequisite for admission to this program is the successful completion of a Bachelor's degree (or comparable degree) with piano as the main artistic subject.
  • Students who have not graduated from a German-speaking institution must prove that they have sufficient German language skills (min. level A2 according to the European Framework of Reference).
  • Successfully passed aptitude test

Qualifying examination

The aptitude test consists of an artistic-practical examination in the main subject. It lasts about 20 minutes and consists of different tasks. It is possible to contact the main subject teacher directly to arrange an individual consultation. Detailed information can be found in the Qualifying Examination Regulations, especially in the appendix for content requirements and conduct of the examination.

The Master of Music Lied Design (Piano) program is primarily practice-oriented. The focus in the Core Module and the Artistic-Practical Context Module is on subjects that are directly directed toward the performance of musical works. In the elective module, a variety of subjects are offered to round out the program in great complexity through the acquisition and deepening of knowledge and skills. The program is divided into the following modules:
